This morning City officials from West Allis joined Milwaukee County, County Executive David Crowley and representatives from Greendale, Shorewood, South Milwaukee and Wauwatosa to demonstrate our commitment to safer streets in the community.
Each community will be deploying a series of traffic calming demonstration activities to help each municipality study proposed traffic improvements with a goal of reducing fatal and serious crashes.
In West Allis, we are:
1. Conducting a near-miss study with Miovision Near-Miss Detection cameras and equipment at the intersection of Lincoln & S. 60th Street.
2. Installing a temporary speed cushion at a segment of S. 59th Street between Mitchell and Lapham.
3. Installing temporary speed humps near S. 96th Street & Maple Court and S. 97th Street between Schlinger Street and Washington Street.
Project funding will also advance the purchase of necessary signage, evaluation of speed study data, City of West Allis Department of Public Works labor, and promotional letters to residents.

It's that time of year again! Spring yard waste collection begins Sunday, April 20 and continues through Sunday, May 11. During this time, yard waste materials like leaves, weeds, flowers, vines, and other non-fruit and vegetable materials can be placed in the street along the curb line for pickup.
Please be aware there may be a delay of up to two weeks before crews begin collecting the yard waste. You can also bring your yard waste to one of the West Allis drop-off sites for disposal without charge.
Tips for Yard Waste Collection
Grass clippings are not considered yard waste and are not accepted at the drop-off sites or collected with yard waste collection. Leave grass clippings in place or consider starting a compost pile. You can also use grass clippings as mulch under trees and shrubs at home. Don’t rake grass clippings into the street!
Take advantage of curbside yard waste collection which takes place each spring and fall.
Do
Rake yard waste into the street along the curb line forming a long, low pile.
If you don’t have a curb, place material along the roadway in a long, low pile.
Wet material down to prevent it from blowing away.
Remove pots and soil from plants before placing for collection.
When parking on the street be mindful of leaf pile locations and allow a 15 foot clearance.
Do not
Mix yard waste into brush piles.
Place materials for collection in drainage ditches, alleys, garbage containers, ash boxes, or piles in your yard or driveway.
Place yard waste for collection at any other time but during the dates listed.
Park over yard waste piles. This prevents crews from picking up material and is a fire hazard.
Place fruit and vegetables, including pumpkins, into the curb line with yard waste due to rodent activity. Instead, place those items in a plastic bag, tightly tied, then dispose of in your City garbage cart.
Bring your yard waste to one of the West Allis drop-off sites for disposal without charge. View drop-off site locations and hours here.
Pine cones, apples, acorns/nuts, "whirly birds" from maple trees are considered "fruit" from a tree and can go in either the garbage or your yard waste pile. For ease of collection and to prevent clogging storm drains it is preferred that the material is bagged and placed in the garbage.

Starting in May, WisDOT will begin reconstructing a 300-foot section at the Beloit Road railroad crossing and permanently remove the 55th Street crossing. The new Beloit Road signal equipment that will be installed cannot accommodate the closely spaced crossings found at Beloit Road, 60th Street, 57th Street, and 55th Street. Due to this, 55th Street will no longer go through the railroad crossing. Instead, moving forward, cars must turn on Mobile Street to cross at 57th Street, Electric Avenue, Beloit Road or 60th Street.

Root River Parkway has been re-opened. There is a small area that is still blocked off awaiting repairs, but traffic can flow freely in both directions. Thank you for your patience!
