Business Occupancy Permits
The City of West Allis Revised Municipal Code requires a Certificate of Business Occupancy be obtained before engaging in any business activity on any premises in the City. The Business Occupancy Application is now online.
Occupancy fees are based on the size of the space being occupied and payment is accepted upon application in the form of cash/check (debit/credit cards are not accepted).
Occupancy Permit Inspection Appointments
When a completed application form is submitted with the required fees a site inspection can be scheduled. Inspection appointments are scheduled at least three (3) days out from when payment is made and are typically scheduled Monday through Friday from 9:30am - 10:30am or 10:30am - 11:30am.
Building, Electrical, Plumbing, Health, and Fire Inspectors will each review the site and area associated with the occupancy application within the one hour inspection window. Inspectors do not come together so there must be someone available to let them enter the space during the allotted one hour window.
All five (5) inspectors must approve occupancy before the final Certificate Of Occupancy will be issued.
Information provided on this site is not intended to answer all questions concerning occupancy permits. If you have any additional questions concerning this process, please contact the Code Enforcement Department.
Temporary Occupancy Permits
The City of West Allis may permit the temporary use of a building, structure or premises. The City will determine the time frame within which the temporary use is permitted, based on the extent hazards are created by the temporary use. This time frame may not exceed 180 days, except the City may grant extensions for demonstrated cause. Buildings or spaces considered for temporary use shall conform to the requirements of chs. SPS 361 to 366 as necessary to ensure public safety, health and general welfare. The City may require additional safety requirements for temporary use as a tradeoff for any safety provisions that may be lacking. The City may terminate the approval for temporary use at any time and order immediate discontinuance of the use or complete evacuation of the building or space.
