Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan

In partnership with the Wisconsin Bike Fed, the City of West Allis adopted a Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan in 2008. This document serves as a blueprint to continuously improve walking and bicycling conditions throughout West Allis. The plan prioritizes improvements for walking and biking facilities and identifies best practices in planning, designing, implementing and maintaining those facilities.

Completed Projects

Since the plan's adoption, the City has built over 4.5 miles of bike lanes. See today's network on the West Allis Bike Map. Completed projects include:

  • W. National Avenue Reconstruction

    • Since 2018, portions of W. National Ave. underwent major redesigns to be friendlier for people walking and biking. The new street includes wider sidewalks, outdoor seating, improved crossings, bike lanes, green bike boxes and lanes through conflict zones, trees, and improved streetscaping.

  • Bike Lanes and Routes

    • The City added painted bike lanes to streets including W. Burnham Street, W. Cleveland Avenue, W. Greenfield Avenue, W. Oklahoma Avenue, and S, 116th Street. Signage for bike routes were also added to a variety of City streets to help cyclists navigate through West Allis.

  • Bike Racks

    • Starting in 2013, the City of West Allis began purchasing and installing City-branded bike racks throughout grant-eligible areas in West Allis. Based on its popularity, the program expanded to the entire City. Today, all bike racks have been installed, but the City is planning more! • Current Projects

    • The City is currently implementing a host of initiatives and projects related to walking and biking. Projects underway include:

    • Downtown Pedestrian Improvements

      • Through Federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding, West Allis will be improving traffic safety on W. Greenfield Avenue through the City's downtown. "Rapid implementation" style paint-and-post curb extensions will be built throughout the corridor to add space for pedestrians, shorten crossing distances, and create a safer corridor for all.

    • New Bike Lanes

      • This summer, W. National Avenue (from S. 62nd Street to S. 65th Street) and W. Beloit Road (from S. 60th Street to W. Lincoln Avenue) are being reconstructed. As part of reconstruction, streets will be reconfigured to include bike lanes.

    • Powerline Trail Study

      • In partnership with the Milwaukee, Greenfield, and St. Francis, West Allis was awarded a grant to study the creation of a new trail along WE Energies powerline corridors. If completed, this trail would connect the lakefront to the existing Powerline Trail in Greenfield, which would then turn north through West Allis to the Hank Aaron State Trail. This study will identify routes, preliminary design, and costs.
