Districts

Downtown

Between 70th and 76th Streets along Greenfield Avenue, West Allis' historic downtown comes alive throughout the year with community parades, West Allis A La Carte, and the Downtown West Allis Car Show. These events welcome thousands of visitors each year, who can also check out the unique blend of independently owned shops and restaurants. Major investments by the Downtown West Allis Business Improvement District and City of West Allis in recent years - including new gathering spaces and public art - have made the district a one-of-a-kind outdoor destination.

Town Center

The former site of the historic Allis-Chalmers factory is now a bustling commercial center. Transformed in the 2000s, Summit Place is the City's largest office center and hosts a variety of non-profits, major companies, and industry within the beautifully restored factory buildings. Next door, the West Allis Town Center shopping center is draws thousands of people across the region to its collection of large-scale retail stores and prominent national chains.

Farmer's Market

Established in 1919, the West Allis Farmer's Market has been a source of fresh produce for generations of families. Today, the largest open-air market in the Milwaukee area anchors a growing commercial district in the heart of West Allis. In 2018, Mandel Group broke ground on a multi-million-dollar redevelopment which included hundreds of new apartments at The West and SoNa Lofts. The district includes must-visit local businesses like Ope! Brewing and Al Pastor Mexican restaurant. Construction is now underway for Maker's Row, a food-centric hub for independent businesses. 

Burnham Pointe

Burnham Pointe is the City's newest business district and is quickly becoming a destination for Latino entrepreneurs. Located on the Eastern edge of the City and only a short walk from the West Allis Farmer's Market, Burnham Pointe has seen new investment with the City's newest park, Burnham Pointe Park, anchoring the district's West end. The district is defined by its mixed-use buildings and the variety of restaurants, bars, and other unique businesses. 

Corridors

Highway 100

Over the past 90 years, Highway 100 transformed from an isolated, sleepy neighborhood on the fringe of Metro Milwaukee to one of the region's major transportation corridors. Today, the district is identified by its bustling thoroughfare and the mix of large format stores, convenience retail, and light industrial businesses along its length. In 2019, the City studied the Highway 100 corridor to evaluate the market potential for new businesses and create a long-term development plan. Learn more on the study website.

Greenfield

Greenfield Avenue is West Allis' major East-West artery. This corridor has it all, from the unique shops of West Allis' Downtown to national chains, major mixed-use development, and homes. Greenfield Avenue is known for its excellent transportation access with a major regional bus line and strong connections to the interstate system and neighboring communities. Notably, Greenfield is home to West Allis' largest and most iconic institution, the Wisconsin State Fair. 

70th

The City of West Allis and its private redevelopment partners began an exciting redevelopment program to transform 70th Street, once the Western boundary of the historic Allis-Chalmers factory, into one of our most exciting and eclectic corridors. The project began in 2020 with the grand opening of The Gage event space and continued with the opening of a Home 2 Suites extended stay hotel. Keep an eye out for the next phase, in which new residential development will continue the area's transformation. 

National East and West

Before there were cars, National Avenue was the backbone of our community. Today, this corridor continues to connect homes, businesses, and institutions across our city and beyond - the heart of downtown Milwaukee is only a short trip by bus or car via National Avenue and 1st/Water Street. Led by the City's strategic vision for the corridor which led to investment in street reconstruction and economic incentive programs, National Avenue has undergone explosive revitalization in recent years highlighted by new restaurants and breweries, hundreds of new apartment homes, and a skate park. 

Becher

Thanks to the energy of local entrepreneurs, the hidden gem that is Becher Street is now West Allis' worst-kept secret. The Becher Street corridor is home to great food and drink and is a destination for foodies visiting the Milwaukee area. In 2022, Becher Street also became home to the Cheese Wheel Classic, the newest leg of the legendary Tour of America's Dairyland bike race. 

Lincoln

Lincoln Avenue is a major East-West thoroughfare running through West Allis' southern side. This corridor is identified by its suburban design and blending of homes and businesses. The corridor is home to many key institutions like West Allis Memorial Hospital, both high schools, and the locally famous Grebe's Bakery.
