WEEKLY COMMUNITY UPDATE

103rd SEASON - WEST ALLIS FARMERS MARKET OPENS MAY 7 

Our beloved West Allis Farmers Market opens for its 103rd season on Saturday, May 7!  Stop by from 1 - 6 p.m. to get your Mother’s Day flowers for mom and grandma! The market will be open during these days and times: 

  • Tuesdays and Thursdays | Noon - 6 p.m. 
  • Saturdays | 1 - 6 p.m. 

Numerous food and specialty vendors as well as food trucks are scheduled for this season, especially Saturdays. Stay tuned for exciting events throughout 2022, including Food Truck Fridays on select dates from June through September, Makers Markets, National Night Out, Pawtoberfest, and more! We will now welcome well-behaved dogs to join in the market fun! It is the owner’s responsibility to ensure dogs are non-aggressive, on a leash, and under control at all times. More detail on how to best enjoy the market with your doggo is in our FAQs. 

We have a map of available parking (PDF). We recommend you check out our lot with access off of 65th St., at 6501 W. National Ave., the church parking lot at 6420 W. Mitchell St., and the school parking lot at 6213 W. Lapham St., in addition to available street parking. There will be no parking in the gravel lot across from the market and S. 66th Street will be closed for a street infrastructure project. 

WELCOME, CONRAD GARDENS NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION! 

Last night the Common Council formally recognized the creation of a new neighborhood association, Conrad Gardens in District 3! Thank you to Myra Becker, Carrie Dalton Simpkinson Zagzebski, Kara LaFond Witty, Anna Tran, Marielli Mueller, Mianna Ingold-Gagnie, Résl Okruhlica, Justina Hepburn-Gray, Moriah Nord for getting the Association off the ground.

 CITY DROP-OFF SITES – AVAILABILITY & OPEN HOURS TUESDAY - SATURDAY 

The City Dump at 6300 W. McGeoch Avenue and the Morgan Avenue Dump at S. 116th Street will be operating during the below dates and hours. Both will be closed on Mondays. 

This temporary measure allows our limited numbers of staff the time necessary to perform vital tasks such as filling potholes, yard waste collection, sanitary sewer line cleaning, storm sewer cleaning, garbage and recycling pick-up, asphalting street water cuts, etc. 

Hours: 

The Municipal Yard Drop-off site, 6300 W. McGeoch Avenue: 

  • Monday: CLOSED 
  • Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday: 7:15 a.m. to 3 p.m.  
  • Wednesday: 7:15 a.m. to 5 p.m.  
  • Saturday: 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. 

The Morgan Drop-Off site, 3601 S. 116th St., open May 31 to September 30: 

  • Monday: CLOSED 
  • Tuesday - Friday 7:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. 
  • Saturday: 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The City is hiring for multiple Department of Public Works full-time and seasonal positions. Full-time positions include Sanitation & Streets Crewmembers, Street Maintenance Repairers, Tradesperson-Carpenters, and Facilities Maintenance Repairers. We offer great pay and rewarding benefits. PUBLIC WORKS OPEN HOUSE & JOB FAIR MAY 14 

Enjoy free, family-friendly fun on Saturday, May 14 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. at the West Allis Department of Public Works Building, 6300 W. McGeoch Ave. Tour Public Works and get a first-hand look at operations. Meet crews, check out demos, and chat with Public Works staff. Please note the city dump at this address will be closed that day. 

Come speak with Public Works staff about regular and seasonal job openings. You can apply on-site. View openings at www.westalliswi.gov/careers. If you have a little one who's crazy for trucks, Public Works vehicles will be on display and young visitors can explore and learn more about Public Works equipment. Games, prize drawings, and food vendors will be on hand to make this a full afternoon of fun!

WISDOT OPEN HOUSE MEETING MAY 16 

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) Southeast Region is scheduled to begin work on the following intersections beginning in June, weather permitting.  

  • S 76th Street & Becher St 
  • S 92nd Street & Lincoln Ave 
  • S 60th Street & Greenfield Ave 

The intent of the project is Milling, Grading, Sanitary Sewer, Storm Sewer, Water Main, Base, Concrete Pavement, Asphalt Pavement, Curb & Gutter, Sidewalk, Signals, Lighting, Signing, and Pavement Marking. During Construction access to local residences and businesses at each intersection will be maintained, and a detour will be posted for through traffic. All persons interested in this project are encouraged to attend an open-house meeting on Monday, May 16th from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at West Allis City Hall, 7525 W Greenfield Ave, in Room 128. Project Plans with be on display to illustrate the work in detail.

 ATTEND FRIDAY’S MAY 6 BROADWAY CONCERT 

Check it out! The Suburban Singers Community Choir will hold “A Bit of Broadway” Concert on Friday, May 6 at 7:30 p.m., and you're invited. This concert is in dedication to the memory of longtime member Emma Buchholz, who passed away on May 14, 2021. The choir will perform medleys from treasured Broadway musicals including “Oliver,” “My Fair Lady,” “Oklahoma,” and “Les Miserables,” as well as a tribute to the late Stephen Sondheim, spanning Sondheim’s work from “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,” “Sweeney Todd,” “Company,” and more. 

The concert will be held in West Milwaukee Intermediate Schools Liberace Auditorium, at 5048 W. Greenfield Ave. Tickets are $10 at the door or can be purchased in advance at $8 for adults or $7 for students/seniors at www.wamwrec.com. (Cash only for purchases day-of at the concert). COMMUNITY MEETING – NOTICE FOR BIKE RACE MEETING MAY 24 

The West Allis Cheese and Sausage Shoppe, bringing you our summer Cheese Wheel Classic Bike Race, will be hosting a community meeting where you can learn more about the race, on Tuesday, May 24 at 5:30 p.m. at Station No. 06. The address is 6800 W. Becher St., West Allis. Join to hear more about the Tour of America’s Dairyland series, and what it means for you and the community. You will have the opportunity to meet and ask questions to the race organizers, event promoter, and City officials. We’ll see you there!
