Mobile Food Vendor And FOOD PEDDLER

OPERATING A FOOD TRUCK IN THE CITY OF WEST ALLIS

Anyone who wishes to operate a food truck ( a pushed, pedaled, pulled, motorized, or movable vehicle or cart, or from a carried container) in the City of West Allis must have the following:

  • A Mobile Food License issued by the City of West Allis Health Department or a food license from other jurisdictions/municipalities in the state of Wisconsin
  • A Service Base license or Restaurant license that is the service base; or variance for no service base from DATCP
  • A Food Peddler License issued by the City of West Allis City Clerk
  • Certified Food  Manager Certificate

Failure to obtain and display the above will result in a citation and the inability to operate in the City of West Allis.

MOBILE FOOD ESTABLISHMENTS

A mobile food establishment is defined as a restaurant or retail food establishment where food is served or sold from a movable vehicle, pushcart, trailer, or boat which periodically or continuously changes location and requires a service base to accommodate the unit for servicing, cleaning, inspection and maintenance. Mobile food establishment does not include a vehicle that is used solely to transport or deliver food or a common carrier regulated by the state or federal government, or a movable concession stand designed to operate as a temporary food establishment.

Mobile Food Establishment operators must have the following:

  • City of West Allis Mobile Food license or a food licenses from other jurisdictions/municipalities per State mandate
  • Copy of Service Base license or Restaurant license that is the service base; or variance for no service base from DATCP
  • City of West Allis Food Peddler's License from the City Clerk's Office at City Hall, which is located at 7525 W Greenfield Avenue, West Allis, WI 53214.  You may also download the application here (PDF) or call 414-302-8220.

LICENSING

City of West Allis Mobile Food License: 

  • For mobile food establishments that will operate in West Allis
  • Please call 414-302-8600 to apply for a license or click here.
  • Fees are based on the complexity of the food preparation and are determined by what is being served, processed, and sold (menu)
  • West Allis Mobile vendors licensed by West Allis are not charged an additional inspection fee

You will need to submit the following documents with your application:

  • If you are licensed in another jurisdictions/municipality - a copy of that food license
  • Service Base license or Restaurant license that is the service base; or variance for no service base from DATCP
  • City of West Allis Food Peddler's License

  • Fee: $116 ($50 (for other jurisdiction licensed mobile food establishments only)
  • Valid July 1st through June 30th (annual)
  • A background check by the Police Department will be conducted
  • You may be inspected by the West Allis Health Department and the Fire Department

You will need to submit the following with your application:

  • A description of the food offered, including a copy of the menu.  
  • Proof of a state certificate of examination and approval from the Sealer of Weights and Measures where the applicant's business requires use of weighing devices approved by state authorities.
  • Proof of a food-related permit issued by the West Allis Health Department.

Advisory: The environmental health specialist or fire inspector may impose additional requirements to protect against health hazards related to the conduct of the mobile food establishment, may prohibit the sale of some or all TCS foods, and when no health hazard will result, may waive or modify requirements to these rules relating to physical facilities. Failure to comply with these requirements will result in the closing of your operations.
