May is Building Safety Month in the City of West Allis

Building Safety Month
Mayor Dan Devine has proclaimed May Building Safety Month in the City of West Allis.

Building Safety Month is a national public awareness campaign promoted by the International Code Council to help individuals, families and businesses understand what it takes to create safe and sustainable structures. The theme for this year’s campaign is “Code Officials— Partners in Community Safety and Economic Growth.”

West Allis’ Building Inspection and Neighborhood Services (BINS) Department is committed to the health, safety, and welfare of the community through regulation of building and zoning codes. BINS encourages residents and business owners to review and improve safety measures and code compliance on their properties during Building Safety Month. Opportunities to do so include:

  • Install smoke alarms on every level of the building; in homes, ensure a smoke detector is in each bedroom as well.
  • Check to make sure smoke alarms are working properly and replace batteries annually.
  • Install carbon monoxide (CO) alarms. These alarms are required in all dwelling units that contain a fuel-fired appliance and dwelling units that have an attached garage.
  • Examine all power strips or electrical cords to ensure they are not damaged, cracked, or overloaded.
  • Replace any appliances that may have frayed cords. Do not use appliances with frayed or damaged cords.
  • Use only listed power strips with integral overload protection that have been tested by a product safety laboratory.
  • If your business or dwelling uses gas-fired appliances, schedule an annual inspection, cleaning, and tune-up by a qualified specialist.
  • Review emergency exit procedures with employees or other family members.
