Union Pacific Update on 68th and 71st Street Crossings

Union Pacific provided the following update today concerning the signals and gates at the 68th Street and 71st Street crossings: Union Pacific will institute a 20 mph temporary speed limit for the trains through these crossings until the crossings can be repaired. Union Pacific has assured the City that the crossings are still safe, because the crossing warning systems operate under a fail safe system. This means that if the crossing warning system malfunctions or the power is cut, the gates will descend to, and remain in, the down position until the issue is repaired. The crossings cannot be fixed until construction can take place in the spring, as asphalt is not currently available and excavation in the ground is difficult in winter weather. In summary, trains will no longer routinely blow their horns when approaching the crossings, because they will be operating at a slower speed, but the crossings remain safe. Construction to fix the crossings will start in Spring 2017.
